A fake advertisement telling Apple users that they could make their iPhones waterproof by upgrading to new software tricked a bunch of users into breaking their phones.
The joke advertisement, which closely resembles Apple’s official ads, was sent out on different social networks. “Update to iOS 7 and become waterproof,” claims the ad, explaining that “in an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry.”
Those who believed the ad upgraded their iPhones – and then dunked them into the water to test the new “new feature,” turning their phones into paperweights. (The Independent)
