The 3-D action movie Jack the Giant Slayer, based on the Jack and the Beanstalk story, debuted in first place at the weekend box office. But the film, which stars Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor, Ian McShane and Stanley Tucci, and cost close to $200 million to make, took in just $28 million in its debut weekend, coming in below expectations.

  • Last week's top movie, Identity Thief, fell to second place.

The comedy 21 & Over, about a guy who gets dragged out by his two best friends for a celebration that turns into debauchery on the night before he has his medical school interview, debuted at Number Three. It stars Miles Teller, Skylar Astin, Justin Chon, Sarah Wright and Francois Chau.

Opening in fourth place was the horror sequel The Last Exorcism Part II, which picks up where the 2010 original film left off. It stars Ashley Bell as Nell, who's found scared and alone in rural Louisiana and brought to New Orleans to start a new life. But the evil force that once possessed her is back with a new plan. Julia Garner, Spencer Treat Clark and Louis Herthum co-star.
